Chapter 5

Mary stood next to the piano where Anna was practicing her scales. Her student wore a light gray cotton dress with simple lace sewed onto the front. Her black hair was braided and pulled around her head. Mary leaned into the keys playing simple note arrangements for Anna to try and match. Her voice would flutter and rise in a desperate attempt to find the pitch.

This was her fifth lesson. For three weeks they had met, and Mary was showing Anna all sorts of essential techniques with breath, stance, about how to open the throat to let sound out. She was getting better, but she still had a long way to go.

"Don't force it, Anna," Mary said, her hands falling to her lap. Her finger wore a golden ring Willa Marks had given her, at a private tea party the Saturday before. She liked the way it gleamed in the light and was so pleased when Anna complimented it. Anna always noticed all of Mary’s jewelry or the different hairstyles she wore. She had even given Mary some of her old dresses since they were the same size. Mary planned to make some alterations, however. Some beading here, some feathers there.

"I am just exhausted, Mary." Anna slumped over the piano keys and lay

her forehead on her hands; Mary gently placed a hand on

Anna's shoulder. Even though she was ten years younger, she often felt others sought comfort in her.

But Anna was also different. She was the closest Mary had come to having a real friend. Anna saw above the class difference many women and men could not seem to avoid. There was no wedge of superiority in the way she viewed Mary.

"What is it?" Mary asked.

Anna had never broken down like this. She was always a wave of positivity open to the share with the world. Never once did she frown or fret.

"My Aunt is very sick. I fear for when she dies, that my Uncle will lose his mind or something awful."

"We can end today's lesson, if you need some time, Anna. No reason to stress about silly notes and music," Mary chirped placing her hand on Anna's back.

"You are too sweet. You have thousands of reasons to cry and you are listening to some wealthy woman belly ache over petty grievances."

"But, we all have our own experiences which we must deal with."

They smiled at each other then. The moment of tension had ended. Mary could not help but feel a pang of sadness for the dying woman. She remembered the way her body felt, the sounds she made when Mary had lapped at her aging chalice. Mary's heart dropped slightly, but she understood life came hand in hand with death. They sat together in silence, until Anna stood up slowly.

"I'm so sorry. My Uncle... he just doesn’t care for me much, and I worry."

"It's okay, Anna. I can come back next week and we can work more on this. It is no problem.”

Mary was taken aback as Anna flung her arms around her and held her in an embrace.
